Ryan Reynolds credits wife Blake Lively for ‘keeping me sane’ through anxiety attacks

Ryan Reynolds revealed his life-long battle with anxiety has been eased thanks to the loving support of his second wife, Blake Lively.

‘The expectations [of starring in Deadpool] were eating me alive,’ the 40-year-old actor admitted in Tuesday’s edition of Variety.

‘Blake helped me through that. I’m lucky to have her around just to keep me sane.’

Ryan said his anxiety attacks first developed growing up in Vancouver as the son of a ‘tough’ cop, fireman, and boxer called Jim.

‘He wasn’t easy on anyone and he wasn’t easy on himself,’ Reynolds said of his father – who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1995.

‘I think the anxiety might have started there, trying to find ways to control others by trying to control myself. At the time, I never recognized that. I was just a twitchy kid.’

And the wisecracking Canadian didn’t last long at Kwantlen Polytechnic University back in 1994.

Ryan admitted: ‘I’m not being facetious. I spent 45 minutes in college, and I turned around and said, “I’m going to drive to L.A. and try to get into the Groundlings.”‘

The 6ft2in heartthrob’s performance as anti-hero Wade Wilson/Deadpool earned him his first Golden Globe nomination for best actor.

The Criminal hunk will compete against Colin Farrell, Ryan Gosling, Hugh Grant, and Jonah Hill when the live boozy show airs this Sunday on NBC.

Both Reynolds and Lively managed to score People’s Choice Award nods for their respective roles in Deadpool and The Shallows.
