Sokoto Assembly passes N220.5 bn 2018 appropriation bill

The Sokoto State 2018 proposed bill of over N220.5 billion presented by Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal was today passed by the State House of Assembly.
The passage followed a motion moved by the Assembly Deputy leader, Alhaji Ibrahim Arzika  (APC- Sokoto North II), after the consideration of a report by the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation.
However, while presenting the report,  the Committee Chairman Alhaji Malami Muhammad (APC- Sokoto South II), urged the state Assembly should brace up in conducting it’s oversight function.
“This is to fast track budget performance and implementation in all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state.

“There is also need for constant sensitisation and enlightenment of the citizens by all stakeholders on what the budget is about and the expenditure of government based on cash flow.
“Moreover, the Board of Internal Revenue should process the review of absolute tax laws and fines for improvement of Revenue base,” he stated.
Malami commended the Interim Management Committee, Sokoto State Board of Internal Revenue by ensuring a huge increase in the state Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) that rose by 200 per cent compared to 2016.
He added that the State Ministry of Budget and Economic planning and all others MDAs should be alive to their responsibility in order to ensure project titles, descriptions and costs are correctly stated in the budget book.
He further concluded, “that the 2018 budget amounting to N220,500,264,565.00 is neither added nor reduced by the committee. The figures remained as submitted to the Assembly by the Governor.
“However, based on the genuine request of Sub-Committee’s the Committee moved resources inwards to accommodate some important demands and interests of the people,” the Chairman added.
The Speaker Alhaji Salihu Maidaji, said “the bill is accordingly read the Third time and passed,” as the members unanimously accepted the motion in a vote.
It will be recalled that Governor Tambuwal had on Thursday, December 21, 2017 presented the 2018 appropriation bill at the State House of Assembly.
