Windows 10 is the most rapidly adopted operating system version ever, Microsoft announced on May 5. The company said that less than a year after Windows 10 launched, the operating system is running on 300 million devices. In comparison, it took Windows 7, another popular launch (and still the top operating system in the world), about a year and a half to achieve the same feat. Windows 8, meanwhile, was a massive failure because most enterprise users and consumers ignored the platform. Windows 10, however, has allowed Microsoft to put the failure of Windows 8 behind it and demonstrate that its personal computer platform will remain a powerful force in the IT industry for many years to come, despite the inroads of mobile operating systems and Google's Chrome OS. Best of all, Microsoft says that it's on pace to getting the operating system running on more than a billion devices within the next couple of years. So, why is Windows 10 so popular? This slide show explores this question and explains how Windows 10 became the operating system Microsoft needed to rebuild its software credibility.
