The skulls of indigenous people killed 100 years ago, during a genocide in colonial Namibia has been returned by Germany.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that the skulls were received by a Namibian delegation at a church service in Berlin.
It was gathered that between 1904 – 1908, 65,000 protesters from the Herero tribe and 10,000 protesters from Nama tribe were slaughtered for protesting against land grabbing by the German colonial masters.
Speaking at the service, German Protestant bishop Petra Bosse-Huber said, “Today, we want to do what should have been done many years ago – to give back to their descendants the remains of people who became victims of the first genocide of the 20th century.”
reports that Germany has refused to tender an apology for the genocide but took “moral responsibility”.
Meanwhile, the affected tribes have filed a lawsuit against Germany in New York, claiming the act violated the rights of indigenous people, as stated in the international law.
It was also learnt that Germany who is currently in negotiation with the Namibian government maintain that they have funded the aggrieved country through millions of Dollars in aid, hence their decision not to apologise.
