Burnley take on Aberdeen in the second qualifying round of the Europa League on August 2nd, with a trip up to the Pittodrie Stadium being the Clarets' first involvement in a European competition since 1976.

With the Premier League less than a month away, Sean Dyche's side are going to need more depth in the side, in case they do qualify for the group stages in Europe, which will give them a much busier schedule.

The Clarets already have a strong starting XI - that was shown by their remarkable finish in the Premier League last season. But recruitments need to be added if they are to repeat last season's heroics.

Here, we take a look at six areas of the team Burnley need to improve or add more depth to:

6. Goalkeeper: Replacing One of the Potential Departures

With club captain Tom Heaton back to full fitness and raring to go, he will be wanting to reclaim the number one shirt from Nick Pope.

Pope ended up playing most of the last campaign as the Clarets' number one after a shoulder injury kept Heaton out for a long time, and when he did return he couldn't reclaim his place due to Pope's brilliant performances.

It has been well reported that whoever is to start the season in goal for the Clarets, will leave the door open for the other one to leave. As it is impossible to predict who Dyche will use, it is possible to start thinking about replacements for when one of them potentially ends up leaving.

With 34-year-old Anders Lindegaard third choice at the club, you would think Dyche would invest in another back-up, someone with experience of playing over recent seasons, so they can be called upon if needed.

5. Central Attacking Midfielder: A Player's Favoured Position

At the beginning of last season, the Clarets took all three points from Stamford Bridge with a brilliant performance using the 4-2-3-1 formation. Jeff Hendrick played in the role behind the striker that day, but has struggled to cement his spot over the season, with Dyche reverting to the traditional 4-4-2 formation for major parts of the campaign.

With a potential busy schedule, Dyche will need to extend his options so that he can switch up the formation whenever he pleases. So an entirely new player, who favours that role would be a key addition to the squad.

All Burnley fans know of Hendrick's struggles in the role, as he prefers to play in the deeper two which marshal the defence. We may see more of that this season if Dyche signs a natural central attacking midfielder.

4. Central Midfielder: Add More Depth

With Steven Defour and Jack Cork proving to be a perfect partnership in central midfield last season, Dyche won't want to be splitting them up any time soon. But any extra cover would be a great help as Defour has shown before he is liable to getting knocks, and with Ashley Westwood the only cover, you'd like to see some more quality added.

Both midfielders have their own qualities which flourish when they play together. The Thursday-Sunday schedule could affect that as both players will be tired physically and mentally.

Dyche wouldn't need to break the bank for signing a new squad player, so could do with an extra pair of legs.

3. Right Back: Need to Replace the Old Cover

With Matt Lawton making the position his own over recent seasons, he has never really had any decent back-ups.

Phil Bardsley had a stint in the role last season, but as the 33-year-old loses fitness, the club may want to bring in a younger, fitter player to be ready to make the role his own whenever he is needed.

With other positions being well stocked, Dyche may want to focus for a right sided defender as he looks to rotate his side through the season.

2. Central Defender: In Need of Depth

With Ben Mee having contract issues and Irishman Kevin Long being the only alternative, Burnley really need to bring a defender in.

It has been widely reported how keen Dyche is on bringing in another centre half before the season begins, with the club being linked with Alfie Mawson and having a deal rebuffed by West Brom for Craig Dawson.

If Ben Mee is to leave you'd expect the Clarets to bring in two new faces, one to slot in for Mee and one for cover alongside Long, but only time will tell if the club vice captain signs a new deal or not.

1. Striker: Finding an Option With Different Abilities

The Clarets are well known for their physical, aggressive strikers, with Ashley Barnes, Sam Vokes and Chris Wood proving just that last season.

With the number of strikers Burnley has with those characteristics, it would be a breath of fresh air to have a skilful, pacy forward to support the physical one.

Forward Nahki Wells was brought in for just that last summer, but with the Bermuda international not getting a chance, Dyche may look elsewhere.

The Burnley manager continues to talk about his evolving plan with this Clarets side, which we saw last season, as the team played a lot more attractive football than in years past. If the team are to improve further, than an additional striker with pace and skill may be just the way forward.
