In all walks of life, there are occasions in which two individuals do not work well together.
In football, when these disappointing duos arise, it is hard to miss. They often cause big issues and bad results for their teams.
Whether two stars have completely different playing styles or struggle to share the limelight, or whether two poor footballers combine to be twice as poor as before, these partnerships become legendary for their disappointment.
Here, we take a look at six of these partnerships that were just like chalk and cheese.
1. Frank Lampard & Steven Gerrard
Two of the greatest midfielders to ever grace the Premier League, a pairing of Lampard and Gerrard should have been one of the most devastating in the history of the sport.
Unfortunately for England fans, they were the exact opposite.
Their styles of play were far too similar. Both were trying to do everything on the pitch, and in the end could do nothing. Neither was well known for their defensive game, meaning the pair were frequently exposed.
A player to sit in defensive midfield was needed to help these two to shine.
2. Titus Bramble & Jean-Alain Boumsong
Arguably the worst centre back partnership in Premier League history, Graeme Souness brought the two together in Newcastle in 2005. Bramble had been voted as the worst player of the previous campaign by fans, and spending £8m on Boumsong raised a lot of eyebrows.
£8m was a huge fee for a player of Boumsong's calibre, as he found himself very prone to mistakes. Next to Bramble, this was a defence which was likely to make an error, and more than likely going to be unable to atone for the error.
The duo were only together for 18 months, but still created one of the worst partnerships in the history of the sport.
3. Didier Drogba & Andriy Shevchenko
Like Gerrard and Lampard, this was a partnership consisting of two superstars. Drogba and Shevchenko were two of the greatest strikers in the history of the game. However, when they combined at Chelsea in 2006, they were far from amazing.
Rumours of a divide in Chelsea's management persisted. Jose Mourinho reportedly only wanted Drogba, but owner Roman Abramovich insisted that Shevchenko was bought and regularly fielded.
Drogba and Shevchenko could not work together, often getting in the way of each other. Drogba was hardly affected by the Ukrainian, but Shevchenko looked a shadow of the man who had dominated in Milan. He scored 22 goals in 77 appearances before leaving the club in 2008.
4. Gary Breen & Christian Dailly
Dailly began his career at West Ham in unspectacular fashion, but the signing of Gary Breen created a horrendous centre back partnership.
Breen was brought in on a free transfer from Coventry City, but it seemed as though the pair could do nothing right during the 2002/03 season. Mistakes and disappointing performances ensured West Ham suffered relegation for the first time in their history.
Many fans have still not forgiven Dailly or Breen to this day.
5. Dean Leacock & Claude Davis
In 2007, Leacock and Davis were entrusted with keeping Derby County in the Premier League. The side broke multiple records throughout the season, and none of them positive.
Derby went an incredible 32 games without a victory, and only managed one win all season. They could not stop conceding goals, and the defence offered no stability at all. Newly promoted sides often struggle in the Premier League, but none performed as poorly as Davis and Leacock's Derby County.
6. Lionel Messi & Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Neither of these players performed terribly when they were together, but for two of football's greatest ever talents, Ibrahimovic and Messi produced some disappointing results during their mutual time at Barcelona.
Messi's emergence as one of the world's best led to a change in formation, which Ibrahimovic believes stifled him on the field. He was often employed on the wing, and struggled to influence games in his normal manner.
A confrontation between Guardiola and Ibrahimovic signaled the end of the Swede's time in Barcelona, but it's safe to say that neither player's legacy was really harmed after their time together.
