The world of football was left in a state of shock on Tuesday after Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Juventus, bringing his glorious nine-year stint at Real Madrid to an end after scoring 450 goals in 438 games and winning 15 trophies with the Spanish giants.
It was a move some people thought would never happen. Every year Ronaldo is linked with the Madrid exit door, only to sign a new and more lucrative deal and enjoy another stellar season at the Bernabeu. Now that the move has actually happened, people have been left speculating on what could happen next.
With Madrid's talisman gone, who could be set to follow the Portuguese forward's example in seeking pastures new? Here are seven players who could be set to join Ronaldo in leaving Real Madrid this summer.
1. Mateo Kovacic
A strong technical player with the ability to make powerful driving runs with the ball, Kovacic is good enough to walk into almost any team in Europe. Yet even this is not enough for the Croatian midfielder to nail down a first-team place at Real Madrid, especially with the likes of international teammate Luka Modric to compete with.
A host of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Tottenham, are reportedly interested in securing Kovacic's signature and it looks increasingly likely that the midfielder will be playing elsewhere come the start of the new season.
2. Marcelo
One of the longest-serving players at Madrid having signed in 2007, it's hard to remember a time when Marcelo wasn't bombing up and down the left flank for Los Blancos.
Regarded by many as the world's best left-back, the Brazilian is one of the definitive players of Real Madrid in the 21st century and will be sorely missed when he goes.
However, reports in Italy suggest this could be sooner rather than later. Calciomercato are reporting that Marcelo could be set to follow Ronaldo to Juventus, with the two players known to be close friends from their time together at Madrid. Should the move take place, it would represent quite the summer's transfer business for the Bianconeri.
3. Gareth Bale
Having struggled to secure a place for himself in Zinedine Zidane's side during the Frenchman's two years in charge of Madrid, Bale looked almost certain to be moving on a few months ago. Since then, however, a few things have changed.
First of all, Bale helped Madrid win the Champions League by scoring twice in the final, including a jaw-dropping overhead kick which many labelled the greatest ever Champions League final goal.
Secondly, Zidane departed, with former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui drafted in to replace him. Under a new manager, Bale could be given the chance to prove his worth to the club and cement his place as a starting XI player.
Finally, the departure of Ronaldo gives Bale an opportunity to stake his claim as Madrid's main attacking outlet in the Portuguese forward's absence. Bale has spent his entire Madrid career in Ronaldo's shadow - will this be his chance to shine, or will he too be heading for the exit door this summer?
4. Karim Benzema
Another long-serving Madrid player, joining the club in 2009 like Ronaldo from French side Lyon, Benzema has often been labelled by fans and pundits as surplus to requirements despite scoring nearly 200 goals during his time at the Bernabeu.
New manager Lopetegui is rumoured to be considering giving his main striker the axe this summer, with a view to signing a new man to lead the line going forward. Could this finally be the year Benzema moves on? If so, there will surely be a host of clubs lining up for the 30-year-old's signature.
5. Keylor Navas
Keylor Navas has been virtually unchallenged as Madrid's number one during is four years at the club, having signed from Levante in 2014.
While the keeper is capable of producing some stunning saves, doubts still remain over the Costa Rica international's all-round game and whether or not Madrid could do better.
Rumours persist that Madrid are keen to do a deal for Roma's goalkeeper Alisson, who has impressed in Serie A and become Brazil's first-choice stopper over the past two years.
With Madrid now flush with cash following the Ronaldo sale, Florentino Perez could finally be prepared to meet the Italian side's heft asking price for the player.
6. Marco Asensio
Last week, the internet was abuzz with rumours that 22-year-old winger Asensio could be set for a shock departure from Madrid, with Liverpool reportedly keen to build their future side around the Spaniard.
However, Asensio now seems likely to remain at Madrid for the time being after his agent told the press he would definitely be staying at the club. One for the future, perhaps?
