If recent reports are to be believed, Tottenham Hotspur are targeting a move for Atalanta centre-back Rafael Tolói to replace Toby Alderweireld - who is likely to depart White Hart Lane this summer, with negotiations set to resume after the World Cup.

The 27-year-old is an unlikely target for Spurs, who usually target younger options who can be improved under talented coach Mauricio Pochettino, but like some of Tottenham's more usual targets Toloi is relatively unknown outside of Italy, where he plays.

So with that in mind here are six things to know about the Brazilian defender...

6. Tottenham Will Have Competition From Other Premier League Clubs

Other than Tottenham, Tolói has also been linked with Wolves, Crystal Palace and Watford, a trio of clubs below Spurs in the Premier League pecking order.

But with their recent stadium move, Spurs are unlikely to spend big this summer without extra income being brought in from players sales, meaning Tottenham will have to box smart in the transfer market.

Spurs fans should expect signings of less well known talent this summer, with the board looking to seek out more value in today's inflated market. If Tottenham could reach an agreement to pay the £15m quoted for Tolói's services last season, a deal could represent fantastic value.

5. He Is Not Another Kevin Wimmer (Probably)

When the rumours of Tolói to Spurs surfaced, Tottenham fans were unhappy that they were being linked with another relatively unknown centre-back, and feared that Tolói could be another Kevin Wimmer.

There is, however, big differences between the two defenders.

When Spurs signed Wimmer he was relatively unproven, having played just one season for FC Köln in the top flight. In comparison Tolói is five years older than Wimmer when he signed for Spurs and has proven his ability in the Serie A over multiple seasons for Atalanta.

Similarly, Wimmer has since proven his weakness in aerial duels and defensive discipline, both areas in which Tolói has shown strength.

4. He Is Very Reliable

There is an added necessity to have a big squad for the Premier League clubs, given that games at the weekend and in the Champions League in midweek tend to cause fatigue, and thus injuries among a club's top players.

But Rafael Tolói's injury record is positive. The 27-year-old defender has missed a total of 19 games over his whole career, which is less than the number that Alderweireld missed with a hamstring injury (ahem, 'hamstring injury') last season.

3. There Is Already One Spurs Player Who May Help Tolói

Rafael Tolói played alongside Lucas Moura when the two were at Sao Paulo in 2012, before the Brazilian winger moved to France to play for PSG.

Lucas moved to north London last January and the presence of a familiar face at Spurs may help Tolói settle into his new surroundings, especially given he has not played in England before and is not competent in the language.

Likewise Tolói would be another addition to the South American influence that Pochettino is starting add to the squad, with Davinson Sanchez, Lucas and Paulo Gazzaniga already among the ranks.

2. He Has the Attributes to Excel Under Pochettino

In today's game, ball-playing centre-backs are becoming more and more attractive, with managers looking to defenders who can both defend and also start an attack.

Tolói impressed in the Serie A last season with his ability to carry the ball out of the back line, and his style of play suits Spurs, who looks to pass the ball out from the back rather than play it long.

Yet the Brazilian defender is not one dimensional. He still possesses some of the more typical traits for a defender, including ability in the air and strength in the tackle - making him a desirable option.

1. He Not a Direct Replacement for Toby Alderwiereld

Spurs fans will be anxious reading reports stating that Tolói is being targeted as a replacement for the Toby Alderwiereld, given the Belgian is widely considered one of the league's best centra-backs.

In truth, this is simply lazy reporting. While Alderwiereld may be leaving Spurs this summer, the club will not sign his replacement in this transfer window.

That is because Tottenham already have the Belgian's replacement among their ranks in Davinson Sanchez, who has worked under Pochettino for a year already, and it already being moulded into one of the world's most promising defenders.

Indeed if Spurs do sign Tolói it will be as a backup option, given if Pochettino continues to utilise a 4-2-3-1 system next season, there will be no place for the Argentinian in the back four ahead of Sanchez and Vertonghen.
