Every club, big or small, has that one team they simply hate going up against. Whether it's an intimidating stadium, an unsuitable playing style or simply the pressure of the occasion, these bogey teams get harder to beat with each passing failure as expectations grow higher and higher.

With the 2018/19 season less than a month away from kicking off, let's have a look at some of the teams who other Premier League clubs have a less than satisfactory record against:

(All stats sourced from 11v11.com and the Telegraph)

1. Chelsea

Bogey team for: Tottenham Hotspur

Though recent years have seen some improvement, Tottenham Hotspur still boast a miserable record against their London rivals in the wider context of Premier League history.

It took a whopping 14 years for Spurs to finally get one over on Chelsea in the Premier League, having failed in an incredible 27 previous attempts. However, Spurs finally got the job done in November 2006 when goals from Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon saw Martin Jol's side claim a 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane - known for a long time as 'Three Point Lane' by the Chelsea faithful.

It would be over a decade more before Spurs managed to claim a league win at Stamford Bridge, with that result finally coming in April 2018 as the Lilywhites came from behind to beat Antonio Conte's Blues 3-1 on their own turf. Though Spurs have broken their Chelsea hoodoo, it will be a long time before their record against the club becomes more balanced.

2. Manchester City

Bogey team for: Burnley

Burnley's record against champions Manchester City makes for dreadful reading, claiming just one victory in the Premier League against their neighbours back in March 2015. five of the other seven meetings between the two sides in the competition have resulted in a win for City, the heaviest defeat for the Clarets being a 6-1 reverse back in 2010.

However, the misery doesn't stop there for Burnley - their atrocious record against City extends back far beyond the Premier League era, claiming just two victories over the Citizens since 1970. Unfortunately for Sean Dyche's men, City's recent dominance of English football means that record is unlikely to improve anytime soon.

3. Manchester United

Bogey team for: Crystal Palace

Avert your eyes, Crystal Palace fans, because this next statistic makes for grim reading: Palace have never beaten Manchester United in the Premier League. Never. Not even once.

Palace's dreadful record against the Red Devils comes not for the want of trying either - the two sides have met 18 times in the Premier League so far, with United winning 15 of them.

The worst defeats came last season, when United ran out 4-0 winners, and in the 2004/05 season when Sir Alex Ferguson's side thrashed Palace 5-2. Still, every record has to end sometime, right?

4. Liverpool

Bogey team for: Everton

It's quite an unfortunate thing when your biggest Premier League bogey team happens to also be your biggest rival, but that is exactly the case for Everton. Constantly in the shadow of their noisy neighbours, the Toffees have met the Reds 52 times in the Premier League and won a miserable nine of those fixtures.

To make matters worse, the last time Everton recorded a victory over Liverpool in the Premier League was way back in 2010, with no sign of things improving in the near future. Given Liverpool's busy summer of transfer activity and Everton's complete misfirings of late in the market, it's hard to see where this change could come from.

5. Sunderland

Bogey team for: Newcastle United

Remember when Sunderland used to win football matches? No? Well believe it or not, it did actually happen from time to time - more often than not against local rivals Newcastle.

Though Newcastle are certainly the more prestigious and historically successful of the two sides, they do not boast an excellent record against Sunderland over the past few years. In fact, the Black Cats' last defeat at the hands of their neighbours came way back in 2011.

Sunderland then went on a six-match winning streak against Newcastle in the Premier League from 2013 to 2015, something which must have really stung for fans of the Magpies. When your team is losing to sides managed by Paolo Di Canio and Gus Poyet, you know you're in trouble.

6. Tottenham Hotspur

Bogey team for: Swansea City

Spurs have struggled to claim victories over a lot of sides over the years - just take a look at the record against the rest of the Premier League's top six for evidence - but fans can take some comfort in the fact that their side have made whipping boys of other clubs further down the food chain.

No side has struggled to beat Spurs in the Premier League more than Swansea City. During the Swans' seven-year stay in the top flight, they faced Spurs 14 times, drawing three and losing 11.

Perhaps it was their attempts to play a passing game against a technically superior side but Swansea simply could not shipping goals against the North London side. Their worst defeat came in December 2016, when Spurs ran out 5-0 victors at White Hart Lane against a poor Swansea outfit that had already begun its decline.

With Swansea now relegated to the Championship, Spurs will miss the Welsh side more than anyone else. After all, their best chance of gaining points in the league is now gone.

7. Everton

Bogey team for: West Ham United

West Ham have gone some way towards improving their record against Everton in recent seasons, claiming two victories against the Toffees in the last three seasons. However, past meetings between these two sides have proven to be rather one-sided, with the Hammers only managing to beat Everton eight times in 44 meetings.

Between 2007 and 2016, Everton went on an impressive nine-year unbeaten streak against West Ham in the Premier League, finally coming to an end when Slaven Bilic's side ran out 3-2 victors at Goodison Park. Though the record has been somewhat more even in recent years, Everton still appear to be comfortably the stronger of the two sides when put head-to-head.
