There will be a Wear-Tyne derby this season - with Sunderland and Newcastle United’s under-23s drawn against one-another in the Premier League International Cup.

The competition is in it’s fourth season now, with Sunderland beaten finalists in last year’s competition.

Officially sanctioned by UEFA, the cup was created by the Premier League with the purpose of allowing English academy players to test themselves against Europe’s elite academies. It consists each season of eight English sides and eight invited European sides.

As yet no date or venue has been confirmed after the North East rivals were drawn against each other for this term’s quarter final.

The Black Cats qualified for the knockout stages after topping their group ahead of Leicester City, Hertha Berlin and Legia Warsaw.

The Magpies, meanwhile, finished second in their group - behind Liverpool but qualifying ahead of Sparta Prague and PSV. They were one of two top second-placed teams to qualify to th knockout stages.

The quarter final derby clash is expected to take place at the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland saying a date and venue would be confirmed in due course.

This is Newcastle’s first time in the competition, while Sunderland have been involved every year so far.

Last term they reached the final where they hosted Porto at the Stadium of Light in a game that saw over 18,000 attend on Wearside.

It proved an ideal springboard to the first team too. Seven of the players who started the final for the Black Cats have this season featured in the Championship.
