Abuja-Kaduna Train Services Expanded
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced an increase in train services along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor in Nigeria, with a revised timetable taking effect from March 6, to meet growing passenger demand and enhance service delivery.
In a statement released on Tuesday by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation indicated that these additional trips are designed to offer commuters more travel options. The aim is also to improve operational flexibility and boost service delivery on what is one of the nation's busiest rail corridors.
Reasons for Increased Services
The NRC clarified that the corridor had previously experienced significant operational disruptions. These included a bomb blast on March 28, 2022, and a derailment on August 26, 2025. These incidents led to a reduction in available rolling stock, from three to just one, and necessitated the introduction of Temporary Speed Restrictions (TSRs) for safety, resulting in a reduction of daily trips.
With stability now restored, and in direct response to sustained passenger demand, the corporation has expanded its services. This move is intended to better meet the expectations of commuters, building on the earlier relaxation of some temporary speed restrictions.
New Timetable Details
Under the recently revised timetable, passengers travelling between Idu and Rigasa will benefit from three trips on Fridays, Sundays, Saturdays, and Mondays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, two trips will operate.
- On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Idu–Rigasa service departs Idu at 8:45 a.m. and returns from Rigasa at 2:30 p.m.
- On Fridays and Sundays, three trips operate with departures from Idu at 7:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., and from Rigasa at 11:30 a.m.
- On Saturdays and Mondays, services depart Rigasa at 7:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and from Idu at 11:00 a.m.
All trains on this route will make their scheduled stops at Kubwa. The corporation advises passengers to familiarise themselves with the updated timetable to plan their journeys effectively. The NRC further reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to enhancing capacity, reliability, safety, and the overall passenger experience across its rail network.
