Oluwakemi Adekokya of Bahrain powered to victory in the women’s 400m at the World Indoor Athletics championships on Saturday.
The Nigerian-born sprinter held off a fierce late challenge from American duo Ashley Spencer and Quanera Hayes to take the tape in 51.45sec at the Oregon Convention Center.
Spencer claimed silver while Hayes finished with a bronze.
Adekokya, 23, controversially switched allegiances to Bahrain in 2014 despite complaints from athletics authorities in her native Nigeria.
In 2014 while representing Bahrain she won the 400m and 400m hurdles at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
