The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Yobe State has formally accused the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) of a failure to adequately inform the party regarding the guidelines, timetable, and other essential activities for the forthcoming 2026 Local Government Council Election.
The political party asserts that this alleged oversight could severely hinder its participation in the upcoming electoral process. Consequently, the ADC has called upon the commission to provide a comprehensive explanation detailing when, how, and through which official channels the relevant electoral information was conveyed to it.
ADC Raises Formal Concerns
Umar Kalli Alhaji, the state chairman of the ADC, articulated the party's position in a letter of concern addressed directly to the chairman of YSIEC in Damaturu. The party underscored that access to timely and pertinent electoral information is an indispensable prerequisite for political parties to engage effectively and lawfully in any election.
The letter explicitly stated: βWe therefore request clear evidence of when, how and through what official channel the relevant guidelines, timetable and electoral decisions were communicated to ADC.β
The ADC clarified that its concerns are firmly rooted in the relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution, applicable electoral laws, and the specific YSIEC regulations that govern the conduct of local government elections in Nigeria.
Threat of Legal and Public Action
The party issued a further warning, indicating its readiness to explore legal and other lawful avenues should it be established that the alleged failure to notify has prejudiced its rights or obstructed its participation in the election. Such measures, the ADC noted, could encompass seeking legal redress, engaging with the media, and organising peaceful public protests in strict adherence to the law.
The ADC has urged the YSIEC to provide an urgent explanation and, where necessary, implement corrective measures to guarantee that all political parties are afforded an equal opportunity to participate fully in the electoral process. The party affirmed that these concerns are being raised in the paramount interest of fairness, transparency, and the integrity of credible local government elections across Yobe State.
