The midfielder did his reputation no harm as he blasted home from the edge of the area to seal an important three points for the Dutch capital side
A superb strike from Riechedly Bazoer sealed a 2-1 win for Ajax in De Klassieker against Feyenoord, sending the Dutch capital side top of the Eredivisie - at least until PSV play later on Sunday.
The game started in frenetic fashion, with the hosts dominating early on at the Ajax ArenA, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock.
Completely against the run of play, the Rotterdam side broke forward just after the 10 minute mark, with Dirk Kuyt playing an important part in the build-up. Collecting the ball from Kuyt, Jens Toornstra twisted and turned past two defenders before finishing low and hard past Jasper Cillessen to make it 1-0.
Ajax reacted quickly, however, with Amin Younes producing a wonderful mazy run before unleashing a shot that ricocheted off the back post and into the net to restore parity just 10 minutes later.
The game then slowed down after the initial high intensity, with both sides struggling to settle into a rhythm and committing needless fouls.
There was more of the same in the early exchanges of the second half, but the Ajax faithful would erupt as Bazoer put them ahead after 65 minutes.
Younes was dispossessed on the edge of the box as he tried to find a killer pass, but the ball broke to Bazoer, who fired home a rocket of a shot from 20 yards, the strike ending up in the top-right corner of Kenny Vermeer's net.
More drama followed shortly after as Davy Klaassen was brought to ground by Vermeer, although Nemanja Gudelj missed the resulting penalty to leave Feyenoord in the game.
Reacting well to the missed opportunity, Ajax kept pressing for another goal as the game edged towards the end, keeping enough pressure on the visitors' defence to ride out their one-goal lead and secure a 2-1 win and retake the top spot in the Eredivisie.
