Robbie Savage has slated Manchester United fans who booed Marouane Fellaini when the Belgian came on against Tottenham on Sunday.

The 29-year-old was the subject of abuse as he warmed up at Old Trafford up during United's 1-0 victory over Spurs, with Jose Mourinho sending him on to help the hosts see out the game.

Savage feels the criticism was unwarranted and will not help Fellaini's confidence following his mistake against Everton.

“Booing your own player, I think that’s an absolute disgrace personally,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I was booed by Derby fans. Some people might think it’s great, but you shouldn’t boo your own players.

“Manchester United fans, the majority of them, they know their football.”

Fellaini gave away a penalty against Everton to help the Toffees snatch a late draw on December 4, thus earning backlash from United fans.

However, Savage has defended the Belgium international, and believes Fellaini has plenty to offer the Red Devils.

"He didn't do it on purpose, and I still don't think it was a penalty, I think Idrissa Gueye went down far too easy," Savage continued.

"I understand why he [Mourinho] brought him on in that game, because eight or nine minutes left, corners or set pieces, he is good defensively."
