"I don’t think it was a malicious tackle. It was a fully committed tackle but it didn’t look malicious.

"Let’s hope that we get good news that it’s only two or three weeks, not six or seven. His injury is quite serious.”

Asked if it could impact on Euro 2016, Wenger said: “I don’t think so. He is seeing a specialist now.”

It does, however, make Oxlade-Chamberlain a major doubt for the friendly matches next month against Holland and Germany.

Arsenal face Manchester United on Sunday, with Oxlade-Chamberlain’s place most likely to be taken by Danny Welbeck.

Wenger said that the next 22 days would be “the key period” in Arsenal’s season and he is confident that Alexis Sanchez, who is yet to score since returning from a hamstring injury, will deliver over the coming weeks.

“He’s a highly motivated player and I believe that he’s conscious of it as well,” said Wenger. “He wants to do even better. Let’s focus on the team performance and after that every individual will benefit from a good team performance.

“It is the key period. We work the whole season for this period and that’s where you’re really tested but it’s where you have an opportunity to show your quality as well.

"On that front I agree that is the most interesting period of the season. It’s a period of the season where you can show quality, nerves and desire as well.”
