The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) yesterday (Thursday) gave a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to resolve the strike embarked upon by college lecturers since 1 July.

The NUT President, Mr. Michael Olukoya, gave the ultimatum in Abuja on the finish of the union's assembly with lecturers' representatives throughout the nation.

As said by a source, ASUU had on July 1, launched into a strike it described as "complete, whole and indefinite".

The lecturers are protesting the non-implementation of some points, contained in a settlement the union had entered into with the Federal Government since 2009.

Olukoya said that members of the union wouldn't hesitate to shut down the nation's faculties, if the 2 events failed to succeed in settlement after two weeks.

He described the present ASUU strike as "nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing".

"We won't hesitate to close down the training system within the nation, if the federal government fails to fulfil or honour the settlement it entered into with the lecturers."

The NUT president said that Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole's name for an entire over-haul of lecturers' qualification as unacceptable to the NUT.

He said that the blame must be placed on the doorsteps of the employers and never lecturers.

"NUT will without end be proud of all its lecturers, believing that each one employment businesses are corruption-free, disciplined and high quality aware of their employment drives," he said.

Olukoya additionally urged the governors of Kogi, Benue and Cross River to honour the settlement they made with lecturers on the fee of 27.5 per cent lecturers wage construction.
