In one of the more pointless games of the tournament, it was Belgium who proved too much for England on Saturday.
Goals from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard were enough to ensure the Red Devils confirmed their best ever finish at a World Cup with a 2-0 victory.
Here are our ratings from the third place play-off game.
1. Belgium: Goalkeeper & Defenders
Thibaut Courtois 6/10 Rarely called into action, but a typically dependable display nonetheless.
Thomas Meunier 8/10 Another superb display. Equally comfortable joining the attack as he was slotting into a back five, his goal was richly deserved. Has had an excellent tournament.
Toby Alderweireld 7/10 As cool as ever, not frequently called upon but did well to clear off the line at an important time in the match.
Vincent Kompany 7/10 Kept Manchester City teammate Raheem Sterling very quiet and didn't appear to be troubled by the Englishman's pace at any point.
Jan Vertonghen 7/10 Very little to do, will be pleased that he didn't have to deal with an energised Harry Kane.
Nacer Chadli 7/10 Did well to lay on the assist for Meunier's opener, but picked up a hamstring injury that forced him off shortly before half time.
2. Belgium: Midfielders
Axel Witsel 6/10 Physically imposing in the middle of the park, but never had to shut down a creative outlet for England. Was quiet, but tidy.
Youri Tielemans 7/10 The latest in a long line of talented Belgians, he looked right at home on the biggest stage. Competent defensively and going forward.
3. Belgium: Forwards
Eden Hazard 8/10 Got what he deserved when he found the back of the net in the second half, constantly caused England problems. Has added a significant chunk to what is already an astronomical transfer value.
Kevin De Bruyne 8/10 Another dominating performance, terrorised England from start to finish. Always chose the right ball and was typically central to everything Belgium did. Laid on the assist for Hazard's goal.
Romelu Lukaku 6/10 Didn't have much of an effect on the game other than his touch letting him down a few times in front of goal.
4. Belgium: Substitutes
Thomas Vermaelen 6/10 Came on in place of the injured Nacer Chadli and deputised well at wing back, a position he's not naturally suited to.
Dries Mertens 6/10 Had 30 mins to make an impact but didn't contribute much.
Mousa Dembele 5/10 Brought on to shore up the midfield in front of the back three, no time to impact the game.
5. England: Goalkeeper & Defenders
Jordan Pickford 6/10 No chance with either of the goals and did well to keep the score at just 0-2 with some vital saves.
Kieran Trippier 7/10 England's standout player yet again, didn't look out of his depth against world class opposition.
Phil Jones 4/10 Totally out of his depth. Caught out of position for Belgium's first and turned inside out for their second.
John Stones 5/10 No major mistakes and carried the ball well, but ultimately not up to the task on Saturday.
Harry Maguire 6/10 The pick of the centre backs, though the competition was hardly fierce. Always a threat from set pieces.
Danny Rose 5/10: Lost Meunier for the first goal and didn't look comfortable in his 45 minutes on the pitch.
6. England: Midfielders
Fabian Delph 6/10 Not embarrassed, but it's difficult to see what he offers this England side. Not influential going forward and defensively needs to improve.
Eric Dier 6/10 Overrun in midfield by the ruthless Belgian forwards, had a chance to score but saw his effort cleared off the line.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek 6/10 Showed flashes of why he could become an England regular, carries the ball so well for someone of his size and offers trickery in midfield.
7. England: Forwards
Raheem Sterling 6/10 Another frustrating performance from a player who is clearly gifted. Seems to get in the right areas but doubts himself when it comes to decision making, should've released the ball earlier multiple times.
Harry Kane 6/10 Not at the races again. Looked tired and low on energy, his best effort sailed wide but will probably come home with the Golden Boot.
8. England: Substitutes
Marcus Rashford 6/10 Added some much needed energy and trickery going forward.
Jesse Lingard 6/10 Could've had an assist if he'd shown more composure in a promising position, ended up blasting the ball across goal.
Dele Alli 6/10 Not enough time to have an impact.
