Italy: the jewel in the crown of southern Europe.

Boasting arguably one of the finest cuisines in the world, home to a stunning array of thriving cities and peaceful villages, and bursting with golden sands showcasing human beings so unrelentingly attractive that pale British tourists cower in shame behind their novelty beach towels - there's no denying that, as countries go, Italy is a sensational all rounder.

And the football! Italy have long been admired for their tactically innovative, intense style of play, and while they may have missed out on the 2018 World Cup, the national team has bags of talent in the locker.

Now Chelsea fans around before the days of Roman Abramovich (an increasingly rare breed, it must be said) will remember a time when Chelsea had somewhat of an Italian revolution throughout the late 1990s/early 2000s - with the likes of Gianfranco Zola, Gianluca Vialli, Pierluigi Casiraghi and Roberto Di Matteo all plying their glorious trade at Stamford Bridge.

While Italian maestro Antonio Conte left the Blues somewhat unceremoniously, Maurizio Sarri, alongside the aforementioned club legend Zola, look set to bring another spell of Italian magic to the Bridge, with former Napoli midfielder Jorginho the first new recruit of the summer.

Sarri looks like the kind of man who sticks to what he knows, so here's six Italian international stars who could help to kick start Chelsea's new Italian revolution:

1. Mattia De Sciglio - Juventus

Now Juventus have signed Portuguese right-back João Cancelo from Valencia, Mattia De Sciglio's place in the first team looks under threat. Especially as new signing Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to prefer playing alongside his tried and tested international teammate.

De Sciglio is naturally a left-back, but there's no way he'll push past Alex Sandro to earn a starting spot next season.

Chelsea could do with a quality left sided defender, and could look to exploit Juventus' need to comply with Financial Fair Play rulings following their mega summer spending spree.

2. Lorenzo Insigne - Napoli

Now this one could be tricky, as Napoli have been pretty adamant that Sarri can't just help himself to the club's finest talents with all the enthusiasm of a gatecrashers at an open bar wedding.

Insigne had some splendid times under Sarri at Napoli, and his ability to cut in from the left could prove invaluable to the Blues, should Eden Hazard decide to pack his bags for the Bernabéu this summer.

3. Domenico Berardi - Sassuolo

Still a bit of a hidden gem, Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi is a player with so much potential.

The 23-year-old dynamo is already his club's all-time top scorer, a feat made even more impressive by the fact he often plays on the right wing.

Chelsea's forward players lacked potency last season, and Berardi would give the Blues a new cutting edge when facing stubborn opposition in the 2017/18 Premier League campaign.

4. Leonardo Bonucci - AC Milan

This would be such a treat for Chelsea fans. Yes, the big lump of pure Italian marble is a little long in the tooth, but his vast experience and leadership qualities would make him an instant hit at the club.

With Gary Cahill showing signs of rapid decline, Bonucci could burst into the Chelsea team and take the captain's armband.

The 31-year-old has all the physical attributes needed to star in the Premier League, and if they play their cards right, Chelsea could use I Rossoneri's interest in Álvaro Morata to steal themselves a bargain.

5. Daniele Rugani - Juventus

Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Juventus' Daniele Rugani in recent weeks, and the central defender could be ideal to bolster the Blues' often chaotic backline.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed an excellent spell with I Bianconeri since joining from Empoli three seasons ago, winning a hat-trick of Serie A titles on the trot.

This deal seems like it could definitely go through, and would be a real boost to Chelsea's hopes of achieving Champions League qualification.

6. Gianluigi Donnarumma - AC Milan

Let's face it, there doesn't seem much chance of Chelsea hanging on to resident Belgian beanpole Thibaut Courtois this summer, with the stopper looking increasingly likely to move to Real Madrid.

The Blues will need a top quality replacement, and AC Milan's wonderkid Gianluigi Donnarumma could be just the ticket.

An Italian international at the age of just 19, the prodigious youngster has potentially two decades of top level football left in him, and is the heir to Gianluigi Buffon's thrown with the national team.
