Bentley has become the latest premium automaker to confirm it's working on an all-electric rival to the Tesla Model S.

During discussions with Australian publication Drive at the launch of the all-new Bentayga SUV, the firm's board member in charge of engineering Rolf Frech, said Bentley has started studying an electric vehicle.

“We're currently in the stage where we're evaluating all the possibilities, however, there are so several question marks behind this. I think there will be an answer within the next six months to a year to decide which direction we will go, however, of course electric will be a future strategy direction for Bentley,” said Frech.

Given Bentley's standing within the Volkswagen Group, Frech went on to say that it could borrow the platform and electric technology from the impending production-spec Porsche Mission E.

“We not only have the ability to use the (Mission E) platform however, we can also use tons of these modules to bring into our car. I think there are big steps coming and what we're doing now is preparing ourselves if these steps make sense then we will go for it,” he said.

The company's electric model could be a special variant of the upcoming Speed 6 sports car or instead, be a bespoke model. Either way, it won't arrive before 2020.
