President Muhammadu Buhari and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, yesterday, met behind closed doors for about 30 minutes. When Kukah emerged from the meeting, which took place inside the President’s office in Abuja, he declined questions from State House correspondents. The cleric, who was seen walking off briskly, few minutes before 11a.m, told reporters that he had a 12.30pm flight to catch. However, presidency sources said the meeting was “one-on-one,” and no official position on the visit should be expected. The bishop, a member of the National Peace Committee for the 2015 general elections, had come under heavy criticism due to his recent media interview, where he faulted Buhari’s administration on its probe of former president, Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, with many accusing him of condoning corruption. Kuhah was quoted to have said that for conceding victory to Buhari in the March 28 presidential election, Jonathan should not be probed. Recall that Kukah, while briefing State House correspondents after a meeting of members of the peace committee led by Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (retd), with Buhari on August 11, had said the President was advised to follow the rule of law in his anti-graft war. He also reminded Buhari the country was no longer under military rule.
