The next Mercedes-AMG E63 is expected with an advanced all-wheel drive system, and it's rumored its arch-rival from BMW will follow suit.

The upcoming M5 is supposed to use AWD with a full- or part-time 50/50 power split, which will send output to the rear axle and only split it with the front wheels when necessary, similar to what can be found on the X5 M and X6 M.

However, the latest prototype captured in motion proves that the xDrive is either still being developed or simply won't feature in the new M5.

Details on the updated BMW M5 remain scarce, but what we can tell you is that it will probably use an upgraded version of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 mill, which should produce more than 600 HP. These aren’t the only changes performed beneath the skin, as the semi-autonomous tech is also expected to be part of the list, along with a new-gen iDrive, borrowed from the latest 7-Series.
