At least eight people have been killed by suspected Boko Haram fighters in Maiduguri, witnesses and the army stated.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, targeted teachers and Muslim clerics, witnesses told the Associated Press new agency on Thursday.

Bala Anjikui, a school teacher, stated the fighters used knives to kill victims in the attack on Bui town nearly 200km south of Maiduguri to avoid gunshots attracting soldiers.

It was learnt that the killing took place around the popular Kadafur Cinema area and other wards where a lecturer at the Waka College of Education, who was also an Islamic cleric, three members of a family and four others were slaughtered.

A military spokesman warned on Thursday that Boko Haram planned more "massive attacks" aimed at their stronghold in the northeastern town of Maiduguri.

Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa stated the attacks are plotted to coincide with Muslims marking the final week of fasting, Eid-el-fitri, in the holy month of Ramadan.

Earlier today, the military congratulated themselves on the arrest of a leader of a Nigerian armed group in neighbouring Niger, saying it had foiled a plot to regroup and launch more attacks.
