There were bomb blasts at two different locations in Anambra State yesterday. The blasts nearly marred the general election as prospective voters in the areas became jittery and almost stayed away from the exercise. The first which took place in the early hours of the day rocked Onitsha South local government headquarters Onitsha while the second exploded at Ayom na Ok pala Primary School, 001 Polling Unit, Amenyi Ward 1, Awka South local government at about 7: 05 am. Information from Onitsha South had it that one person was injured in the incident. Based on what was gathered, the bomb at the primary school in Amenyi, Sunday Sun gathered, was buried in one of the pillars of the school building exploded when some prospective voters arrived for accreditation at about 7: 05 am causing pandemonium with the people scampering for safety. It took the timely intervention of the anti-bomb squad to rescue the situation and before people returned to the polling unit. Though no casualties were recorded, the explosion pulled out the iron window and shattered ceiling and zinc of the school building. People in the area attributed it to desperation of some politicians to win election in the area by all means. Shortly after the explosion some officers of the state's anti-bomb squad were seen making frantic efforts to quell the situation while INEC adhoc personnel present at the scene went ahead with accreditation of voters in spite of the tensed atmosphere. Reacting to the Onitsha blast, Women Coordinator, National Presidential Campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Joy Emodi, described the situation as unfortunate and called on people of the state to be vigilant and security conscious. Meanwhile, electoral materials arrived late in almost all the polling units in Anambra state yesterday forcing some people to leave after hours of waiting.
