Sebastian Rudy had an eventful birthday as the 26-year-old scored the game's first goal before being sent off, before BVB netted three times in the final 10 minutes to win
An extraordinary last 10 minutes kept Borussia Dortmund's title hopes alive, as the Germans fought back to sink 10-man Hoffenheim 3-1 in a frantic finish.
Dortmund went in to Sunday's game knowing only a victory would do after Bayern Munich extended their lead to 11 points, but the home crowd was shocked when Sebastian Rudy netted on his birthday to put Hoffenheim ahead.
Rudy later saw red, but BVB nonetheless struggled to break down the determined underdogs until Henrikh Mikhitaryan slotted home from a well-worked corner 10 minutes from the end.
Thomas Tuchel's men were not going to settle for the point, however, and Adrian Ramos headed home a stunning late winner before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted from close-range to keep Dortmund in touch with the leaders.
