The 38-year-old Palmeiras shot-stopper was a shock inclusion in the squad for the Rio games but never got to make his debut in for the Selecao before picking up the problem
Brazil goalkeeper Fernando Prass has been ruled out of the Olympic Games with an elbow injury.
The 38-year-old was a surprise inclusion in the squad for the Rio games as one of the hosts’ three designated overage players.
The veteran suffered the injury in the warm-up ahead of Saturday’s clash with Japan in Goiana and was replaced by Atletico Mineiro’s Uilson for the routine 2-0 win.
“I have endeavoured to realise the dream of being a Brazilian national team player. But, unfortunately, it is not to be,” Prass wrote on Twitter.
“The examination carried out today showed a fractured elbow and I cannot compete in the Olympics. I'll take care of myself and come back even stronger to lead Palmeiras and, who knows, maybe make the [Brazil] squad again.”
Brazil have until August 3 to name a replacement that must be selected from their preliminary 35-man squad which was submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last month but not made public.
The other goalkeepers reported to have been on the list are Bahia’s Jean, Vasco’s Jordi and current senior team no.1 and Roma shot-stopper Alisson.
However, the Brazilian Football Federation have suggested they intend to replace Prass with someone who did not make the preliminary list.
“We have already consulted FIFA, because he is a player over 23-years-old,” said Olympic team coordinator Erasmo Damiani.
Brazil open their Olympic campaign on August 4 against South Africa.
