The former Bayern Munich man believes there is no chance of an English team becoming European champions for several seasons despite the TV revenue they earn
Germany legend Paul Breitner does not believe that Pep Guardiola will bring instant success to Manchester City.
The Bayern Munich boss will depart the Allianz Arena in the summer to make a switch to the Premier League, but the 1974 World Cup winner does not believe that even Guardiola is capable of leading an English side to the Champions League in the next few seasons as they are not in a position to by a “superstar” player.
"He cannot buy all the players Man City need to become a dominant team in the Champions League," Breitner told Goal.
"The Premier League has so much money. They will earn billions of pounds through the TV rights, more than £3 billion. The Germans only get £700m, which is about 20-25 per cent of the money the Premier League gets.
"They can buy mediocre players for £15m or £60m but they will not improve and their quality will not improve and not become better.
"They will need to wait at least three, four or five years. They will have to wait until someone who is 18 or 19-years-old now has the talent levels to become a star. Then they will maybe be able to buy the next generation of superstars.
"But for the next two or three years, no way a Premier League team would win the Champions League."
