A broadcaster, Maxwell Kumoye, was on Friday docked before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing N761,000 belonging to a company.
Kumoye, 54, residing at No. 7, Adedokun Adigun St., off Egbeyemi Beckly Estate, Ahmadiya, Lagos is standing trial on a charge of stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told court that the accused committed the offence between July 2, 2015 and March 4, at No. 425/427, Old Abeokuta Road, Abule Egba, Agege, Lagos.
Ayorinde said that the complait, Mr Peter Uduak, of G2M Ltd had contracted the accused on behalf of his company.
“The sum of N5.849 million was paid to the accused sometime in the 2015 for airtime to pay to Daar Communications Ltd’s Ray Power for a programme.
“Kumoye paid part of the money and converted the balance of N761, 000 to his own personal use.
“The accused was called to give proper records but he couldn’t give satisfactory account hence the report,” Ayorinde stated.
The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for offenders.
The accused, however, denied committing the offence.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.J. Awope, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Awope said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case till April 15 for mention.
