BT's chief government, Gavin Patterson, is to go away the telecoms large after 5 years within the put up.
The firm mentioned it might have a successor in place within the second half of the 12 months, and Mr Patterson would stay in his put up till that point.
Mr Patterson has been at BT for 14 years, 10 of these as a board member.
Shares within the firm are at a six-year low. Last month, the corporate introduced a formidable restructuring.
BT chairman Jan du Plessis mentioned: "The board is totally supportive of the technique lately set out by Gavin and his staff.
"The broader reaction to our recent results announcement has, though, demonstrated to Gavin and me that there is a need for a change of leadership to deliver this strategy."
Mr Patterson mentioned: "It's been an honour to lead BT since 2013 and function a member of the board for the final 10 years.
"BT is a great business and with the new management team I've recently put in place is, I believe, very well-positioned to thrive in the future."
