Nigerian Senate
Senators on Thursday were divided over the confirmation of members of the Governing Board for the Federal Roads Maintece Agency.
The lawmakers’s disagreement followed Senate President Bukola Saraki’s reading of a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari seeking approval for the appointments.
Buhari indicated that the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria were represented on the board.
However, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, objected to the chairmanship of the board.
He cited nepotism and drew the attention of the Senate to previous appointments of the President where the leadership comprised of one section of the country.
Ekweremadu said it was contrary to the Federal Character principle.
Thereafter, the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, called on the lawmakers to see the larger picture where the six geopolitical zones were represented.
But some lawmakers were angered by Lawan’s comment.
Calm was eventually restored when Saraki ruled against further debate on the matter.
