The Stoke City goalkeeper was stretchered off against Germany on Saturday and will miss out on the chance to represent the Three Lions in his first major tournament this summer

England goalkeeper Jack Butland has confirmed he will miss this summer's European Championship after suffering a fractured ankle.

The Stoke City man was stretchered from the field shortly before half-time against Germany on Saturday, with scans showing Butland required surgery.

And the 23-year-old believes he now has no chance of being ready to take his place in Roy Hodgson's squad as his recovery will not allow him anymore playing time this season.

"I don't think [the European Championship is] going to be an option for me now to be honest because I won't be able to play again between now and the end of the season," he told Stoke's official website.

"It is difficult because I have been working towards the Euros this summer. It isn't the challenge that I expected or wanted this summer but I am going to approach it with the right mentality and learn from it, both physically and mentally.

"I have not had to deal with an injury like this before so I will come out of it as a stronger person and a better goalkeeper, and look forward to the start of next season."

Butland's place in the side will be taken by Southampton's Fraser Forster for Tuesday's friendly against Netherlands as Joe Hart continues to recover from a calf injury.
