The United States women’s national team’s quest for Olympic gold is off to a solid start in Rio.

The reigning Women's World Cup champions defeated New Zealand, 2-0, in its Group G opener on Wednesday at Mineirao Stadium.

Carli Lloyd scored on a header in the ninth minute to give the U.S. an early lead, and it never looked back.

Alex Morgan delivered a quick goal to open the second half. She scored past New Zealand’s Erin Nayler in the 46th minute.

Northport native and midfielder Allie Long got the start in her first-ever Olympic Games. Rockville Centre native and defenseman Crystal Dunn subbed in for Mallory Pugh in the 51st minute.
