Principal witness in the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Bukoka Saraki, Michael Wetkas, on Wednesdays told the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, that Saraki declared a property that did not exist.
Wetkas, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, made the allegation while reading out count one of the charges.
He alleged that while the Senate President was the Governor of Kwara State, he did declare no 15a and b Macdonald Street in Ikoyi Lagos but it was later discovered that none of such property exists.
He said the property was certified after it was declared “but lacks character.”
When asked by Saraki’s lawyer, Paul Usoro if his team actually visited the plot, Wetkas said, “My team went there but I did not go with them, I believed what they reported back to me.”
But Usoro who tackled Wetkas, asked him to read some letters which was written by the occupant of the property, Engineer Chalistus Egwuagu to the Presidential Implementation Committee on Sales of Federal Government Property.
In one of the letters, Ugwuagu was asking the committee to allow him participate in the bidding process, this Usoro said, “is an indication that the property existed.”
Ugwuagu in the letter claimed he had been occupying the property since 1994.
