Petr Cech has suggested he could not see Raheem Sterling’s shot that gave Manchester City a 2-1 win over Arsenal because his view was blocked by an offside David Silva.

The Gunners slumped to a second Premier League defeat in a row at the Etihad Stadium despite taking an early lead through Theo Walcott.

Leroy Sane equalised for Pep Guardiola’s side before Sterling beat Cech at his near post for the winner.

Silva ran across the goalkeeper, in an offside position, as Sterling found the back of the net, and Cech claimed afterwards he had been unsighted.

"There were players in front of the ball so I didn't see the shot,” he told Sky Sports.

"There were players running across, so I don't know if it was David Silva or not, but I couldn't see ball because it was behind the players."

Arsenal, who were also beaten 2-1 by Everton on Tuesday, have now slipped to fourth in the table after consecutive defeats and Cech admitted it had been a difficult week for Arsene Wenger's side.

“I think the early goal in the second half gave them a lot of confidence. They had to put us under more pressure and they pressed us more,” he added.

“We were in control even when they had more possession but we couldn’t hold onto it. The second goal changed everything and they could wait to get us on the counter attack. We are very disappointed in the whole week.

“We have no points but there’s a long way to go and we need to concentrate on ourselves and go back to winning games.”
