Celebrities have shared tributes to Kelly Preston following the actress' death from breast cancer at age 57.

The Jerry Maguire star's death was confirmed on July 13, US time, with her husband John Travolta paying tribute to his "beautiful" wife.

"It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer," he wrote. "She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many."

Travolta voiced his gratitude to staff at MD Anderson Cancer Centre and other medical centres that supported Preston's treatment.

"Kelly's love and life will always be remembered," he added. "I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don't hear from us for a while.

"But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal."

Celebrities expressed their shock and shared memories of Preston on social media.

Russell Crowe tweeted, "Can't remember where, but, met first in late '92 I think. Such a lovely person. In 1995 we auditioned together for Breaking Up. Salma Hayek got that gig. I haven't seen her much, but when I did, she was always the same sparkly eyed gem. Love to her family. R.I.P."

Rove McManus said the news was "so so sad" in a tweet.

"Adding myself to the many people sending their condolences to John Travolta and his entire family over the terrible news that his wife Kelly Preston has passed away from breast cancer," he wrote. His own wife, Belinda Emmett, died of breast cancer in 2006.

Many offering their support to Travolta in comments on his Instagram post.

Sarah Paulson wrote, "Love you so", while Julie Benz added, "I am so sorry for your loss. Deepest condolences to you and your family."

On Twitter, Maria Shriver remembered Preston as "such a bright loving soul, a talented actress, and a loving [mum] and wife".

"My heart breaks for her family who have already known such sadness and grief. Join me in sending them love and strength," she added.

Actress Holly Robinson described Preston as "a beautiful lady. Inside and out", while Chloe Bennet paid tribute to the "enormously kind and unbelievably lovely" star.

"Can't believe this. My thoughts are with her sweet Ella and the rest of her incredible family. RIP," she tweeted.

Actor and producer Daniel Dae Kim, who starred on Lost and currently produces The Good Doctor, tweeted that he worked with Preston on one of his first filmes, For Love of the Game.

"We were shooting on cold days in Colorado, but she couldn't have been warmer or kinder to a young, nervous actor trying to make good," he said. "I'll never forget that. Thank you Kelly."

Actor Josh Gad said he was in "absolute shock" at the news.

"What a beautiful and amazing actress and person. So sad to hear of her passing at such a young age," the Frozen star wrote on Twitter. "My heart goes out to John Travolta and the entire family. What a loss."

Director Rod Lurie said he knew Preston in high school, recalling her as "supernaturally beautiful and kind".

The 100 actress Adina Porter tweeted, "#RIP Kelly Preston. Prayers go out to John, her family and friends."

Spencer Breslin, who starred as Preston's son in The Cat in the Hat, tweeted: "RIP to my on screen mom, #kellypreston. What a lovely woman. Such a sad loss."

Preston is survived by Travolta and their children: daughter Ella, 20, and nine-year-old son Benjamin. Their son Jett died in January 2009 at 16 years old.

On Instagram, Ella remembered her mother as "courageous, strong, beautiful and loving".

"Anyone who is lucky enough to have known you or to have ever been in your presence will agree that you have a glow and a light that never ceases to shine and that makes anyone around you feel instantly happy," she wrote.

"Thank you for being there for me no matter what. Thank you for your love. Thank you for your help and thank you for making this world a better place. You have made life so beautiful and I know you will continue to do so always. I love you so much mama."
