The fee offered for Oscar is almost twice what Jiangsu are paying for Teixeira with both bid proving yet more proof of the remarkable financial muscle being exercised in what is a rapidly emerging and powerful force in football. Especially when it comes to acquiring Brazilian players.
However Chelsea do not want to sell the 24-year-old midfielder and particularly not at this point of the season as they try to turn their campaign around.
Chelsea are 13th in the Premier League table and are desperately trying to ensure they qualify for European competition. Their best hope may be through the cup competitions and they have a Champions League last-16 tie away to Paris Saint-Germain later this month and are in the fifth round of the FA Cup with Oscar proving to be a vital player for them.
It is expected that Jiangsu might come calling again for Oscar at the end of the season which may also be a factor in Chelsea’s deliberations although it is remarkable for them to reject such an offer. It would have been the second-highest transfer fee ever paid to a British club after the world record £86million Real Madrid paid Tottenham Hotspur for Gareth Bale.
Chelsea paid just over £19million for Oscar when he signed from the Brazilian club Internacional in 2012 and he signed a new contract in 2014 which keeps him at the club until 2019.
The deal to take Teixeira to Jiangsu, who are coached by the former Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu, was being finalized on Thursday evening and should be confirmed on Friday with the Chinese transfer window not closing until later this month.
Shakhtar manager Mircea Lucescu said: "We have agreed the sale of Alex Teixeira to China.
"But we will wait a bit to finalise it due to the situation with Luiz Adriano. But it's all sorted on our side."
Klopp had pleaded for understanding from Liverpool fans after abandoning his oursiit of the 26-year-old.
He said: "We made offers, I won't say too much about that, but they were realistic, absolutely, with the premium of it being January, the Premier League, all the plusses you have when you make negotiations.
"It's not that we haven't got money or anything, but you have to work respectfully and responsibly. That's what we do."
The deal is the biggest so far this year and is further proof of China's burgeoning reputation, with Jackson Martinez completing a £32million move to Guangzhou Evergrande from Atletico Madrid earlier this week.
However both those moves would have been eclipsed if Chelsea had agreed to sell Oscar.
