An early 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster by Sindelfingen has sold for an eye-watering $9,9 million at RM Sotheby's Arizona auctions.

The example in question, chassis number 130894, is one of the very first 540 K models ever produced and was initially delivered to U.S. distributor, Mitropa Motors, on April 24 1937. For the first 20 odd years of its life it was owned by noted collector Reginald Sinclaire before coming into the hands of a collector from Colorado in the late 1950s.

In 1962, it was sold again before arriving in the collection of the seller in 1989. Given that it's just 10,277 miles on the clock and retains all the original drivetrain components, it was always expected to sell in the high seven figure range.

Adding to the car's value is that it is believed to be one of just six left-hand drive longtail roadster units ever produced and designed by noted coachbuilder, Sindelfingen.
