The Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) says it rescued 710 abandoned children in various parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital in the last 12 months.
The commission’s Head of Programme, Women Development and Child’s Rights, Mrs. Omotayo Mala-Adebayo who made the disclosure yesterday in Ibadan at a one-day stakeholders’ meeting entitled “Awareness Creation and Campaign Against Child Trafficking and Labour,” added that 378 other minors were reunited with their families during the period under review.
Mala-Adebayo noted that no fewer than 252 children were currently on its scholarship scheme as part of efforts at ensuring a better future for the children.
While regretting that child trafficking and labour were still rampant in the state, she however, disclosed that JDPC had embarked on aggressive campaign and enlightenment to educate the citizenry on the dangers associated with acts with a view to curbing the menace.
