The Commonwealth Observer Group among those earmarked to monitor the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections in Nigeria, has released its report on the elections.
The Communications Officer at the Commonwealth Secretariat, Mr. Will Henleyin announced the release on Friday in London.
The report which was contained in a statement described the elections as “credible, peaceful, transparent and reflected the will of the people of Nigeria.
“The Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has released the report of the Commonwealth Observer Group to Nigeria’s presidential and National Assembly elections on March 28, 2015.
“The Commonwealth Observer Group was led by Dr Bakili Muluzi, former President of Malawi,” it stated.
The statement quoted Muluzi as saying that the elections marked an important step forward for democracy in Nigeria.
“These elections mark an important step forward for democracy in Africa’s most populous country, and a key member of the Commonwealth.
“Notwithstanding the organizational and technical deficiencies, the conduct of the presidential and National Assembly elections was credible, peaceful, transparent and reflected the will of the people of Nigeria.
“Our report includes a number of recommendations which, we believe, could further improve the electoral process in Nigeria.
“We hope they will be positively considered and implemented,” the report quoted Muluzi as writing in the foreword to the report.
The statement stated the report had been sent to stakeholders in Nigeria, including the Federal Government, political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission.
