There was confusion in Ojota area of Lagos this morning as members of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, took to the streets to protest against the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Atahiru Jega.

The OPC members reportedly had some dangerous weapons such as knives, guns and charms as they matched through the popular Lagos/Ikorodu Road as they took over from the 7-Up Bottling Company to end around the old Toll Gate, Ojota area of the state.

Among those who joined them for the protests today were some youths who wore SURE-P vests and were chanting Jega-Must-Go slogans as well as saying Nigerians must vote for President Goodluck Jonathan.

An eyewitness account claimed that some policemen were on hand to provide cover for the protests. Police sources say that the presence of the policemen was to forestall the protests degenerating into a bloody one.

In a quick reaction on Monday, a group, Patriotic Nigeria Now described the protests as shameful and barbaric. The group in a statement said "Causing confusion on the streets, making their members drive against traffic and causing hardship for the people is counter-productive. What message are they sending to the residents on behalf of the President? They are actually unwittingly making people realise that Jonathan and PDP should actually not be voted for. They can protest but certainly not in this version. It is shameful,"
