Uganda has confirmed that Congolese rebel commander has been missing from camp since January 14.

The commander of the M23 rebel group of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is Colonel Sultan Makenga.

He has been declared missing from the M23 camp in Western Uganda since the 14th January.

The Uganda army confirmed on Friday morning, APA said on Friday.

The Uganda army spokesperson Brigadier Richard Karemire stated that they have already informed the DRC authorities that Col. Makenga has been missing from the camp for 3 weeks now.

“We have communicated the rebel commander’s disappearance to the DRC authorities, they also sent a delegation to Kampala and we held meetings with regards to the matter,” Brig. Karemire stated.

Although the whereabouts of the rebel commander are not yet known, it is suspected that he could have returned to DRC.

Last month, the DRC authorities reported that the rebels had escaped into the country and caused havoc in a village in North Kivu province

During that same period the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces intercepted 101 former M23 rebels trying to escape from Bihanga Military Training School in Western Uganda.

M23 was a rebel military group based in eastern area of DR Congo, operating mainly in North Kivu Province led by Col. Makenga but was defeated by UN and Congolese troops forcing them to flee to neighbouring Uganda and Rwanda .

They have been staying in the Ugandan camps since 2014.
