Antonio Conte wants to fight for the Premier League title in his first season as Chelsea manager and make the fans "very proud" of him and the players.

Chelsea finished 10th last season, just a year after being crowned champions, and parted with Jose Mourinho as manager last December.

Guus Hiddink steadied the ship during the second half of the campaign before Conte was brought in to turn the club around on a more long-term basis.

The former Juventus and Italy boss is determined not to dwell on the club’s disappointing past 12 months and is eager to give the fans something to cheer again.

Conte is anxious to get Chelsea back to where he feels they belong, with Champions League qualification and a title challenge on the agenda.

"Usually when there are these bad seasons it means there are many problems, but the past is not important for me, for the club, for the players,” he said.

“What is important is the present.

“We have to fight together to come back and fight for the title. It's important to stay together and overcome this bad period for Chelsea, and to come back to play in the Champions League because it's Chelsea's home.

“I want our fans to be very proud of the players and the manager, it's very important.

"We must work a lot. We come after a bad season, after a 10th place finish and we need to come back very soon in the right position because Chelsea are a great team in England and in the world.

“We must come back to fight for the title. I know it's not easy because we have many teams competing in the Premier League.”
