Arsenal fans are pleading with Arsene Wenger to sign a new centre-back following Per Mertesacker’s injury - but the Gunners boss may have different ideas.
The Germany international will miss the start of the new season with a knee injury, while Wenger has admitted that he will look to sign “experienced” defensive cover.
But it appears another option Wenger has explored is to use Francis Coquelin as a makeshift central defender alongside Laurent Koscielny.

The move was revealed on Jack Wilshere’s Snapchat account, as the midfielder asked his team-mate what he’d been doing in training.
And Coquelin replied: “Been playing centre-back, bossing it, you know what I mean?”
