Communist China is responsible for the majority of success in slashing extreme poverty, a spokesman for Jeremy Corbyn claimed today.

The startling declaration came as the Labour leader sent his shadow chancellor John McDonnell to Davos to read the riot act to the global elite.

Mr McDonnell will blame billionaire bankers and capitalist leaders for creating an 'avalanche' of risks to the global economy at the World Economic Forum.

Mr Corbyn himself has declined to attend the annual gathering, due to include Prime Minister Theresa May and US President Donald Trump.

Ahead of the summit, Mr Corbyn's spokesman said: 'Jeremy Corbyn chooses to go to events where he thinks he can make an effective contribution and it is appropriate for him to go.

'The Davos event has become representative of a system and set of global elites which have clearly failied. It is clearly a broken system that isn't delivering for people.

'That doesn't mean it is not worthwhile for Labour politicians to go there.'

The spokesman said those congratulating themselves on the 'uptick' in global economic growth realise that for billions of people the system was not delivering.

He added: 'If you look at the record of the global economic system over the last generation, you will see there has been the large majority of the success in bringing down poverty and taking hundreds of millions of people out of poverty is in one part of the worldnamely China.

'Across the world there has been a period of growing inequality. In large parts of the developed world, stagnating real incomes and extreme increases in inequality.

'The growth performance over that period has been less than during the earlier period under the previous economic system.'

The spokesman said China and Britain were 'entirely different countries at different stages of development with different economic and political system'.

China has been repeatedly condemned by the international community for abuse of human rights, including violations of free speech, movement and religion.

The country is criticised for use of the death penalty and a failure to provide an independent judiciary.

World Bank data suggests more than 500 million Chinese people were lifted out of extreme poverty in the last 30 years as the economy grew rapidly.

The progress in Chinathe world's most populous nationhalved the global rate of extreme poverty.

Ahead of his trip to Davos, Mr McDonnell said: 'I am going to Davos with a warning for the global elite.

'Many of those attending the World Economic Forum have been patting themselves on the back as international growth figures have begun to pick up.

'But they should be worried. In the real world, outside the Davos bubble of Alpine restaurants and chalets, the global economic system they have built isn't working for billions of people.

'And just as Davos faces the risk of an avalanche this week, growth for a few risks a political and social avalanche unless there is fundamental change to our rigged economic system.'

He added: 'The Davos few have hoarded power and wealth and failed the many. If they stand in the way of the change that's needed, they risk raising the price they pay. Change is coming either way.'
