The election of candidates into the legislature in Cote d’Ivoire started on Sunday peacefully with a large turnout of voters.
Polling stations opened to welcome some 6 million voters who will have to choose among 1337 candidates, the 255 representatives of the next legislature.
“For now, the turnout is going well, in calm,” APA reported on Sunday.
Electoral materials are there.
“We received the first voters at 8:32 am after the opening of polling station at 8:00,” the chairman of Yopougon-Sicogi polling station (west of Abidjan) Moussa Bakayoko stated.
Despite a strong presence of law enforcement to “secure the polling process,” according to police sergeant Gustave Ko Touré, voters appears to be slow in coming at the voting places.
“Sunday is a day of worship and therefore voters go to church before coming to fulfill their civic duty,” a voter in the Sogefiha district tried to justify, sweeping away “the boycott” called by the opposition.
In Adjamé, most of the polling stations opened on time.
“The polling stations will be closed at 6 pm so they have plenty of time to vote,” polling station President Patrice Yao stated.
Meanwhile, the security agents are sitting idly by. 19,822 polling stations in 10,460 polling stations are open throughout the national territory, from 8 am to 6 pm, for these elections.
