Two cult groups clashed in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Saturday night. It was a supremacy battle and it led to the killing of the Deputy Clerk of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Joephrey Nemina.
Based on what was gathered, Nemina was hit by a stray bullet in front of his wife's shop along Agudama Road. He was reportedly rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Nemina was full of life when he got to a supermarket owned by his wife, a source stated. The source said the incident happened between 7:30pm and 8:00pm on Saturday. “The cult members started shooting suddenly. Their gunshots lasted for some minutes and caused panic in the area. The man who died knew nothing about the clash. He was standing in front of his wife's shop where a stray bullet hit him,” the source stated.
But another source claimed that a group of gunmen ambushed Nemina when he was leaving his wife's shop with a bag containing some money. The source who also spoke in confidence said the gunmen shot him and fled without stealing the bag. He said Nemina must have been a victim of assassination.
The state's Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Butswat Asinim, confirmed the report, but said the deceased was a victim of stray bullet.
