The Italy international was forced off late in the first half with his side losing 1-0 against Sunderland, forcing Louis van Gaal to summon debutant Donald Love from the bench

Manchester United's defensive injury crisis continued at the Stadium of Light as Mateo Darmian was forced off with a shoulder injury against Sunderland.

The Italy international was hurt in a clash with Wahbi Khazri late in the first half, with Donald Love making his debut off the bench as a replacement.

Love, 21, only made his senior professional debut while on loan at Wigan in October but was thrust into the action as a result of United's continuing injury problems, particularly at full-back.

Luke Shaw broke his leg against PSV Eindhoven in September, while the likes of Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Guillermo Varela are also currently unavailable.

Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, who have both filled in at full-back in recent seasons, are also sidelined with pelvis and ankle injuries, respectively.

Love's introduction, ironically, coincided with United finding a superb equaliser through Anthony Martial seven minutes before the break.

The Frenchman registered his 10th goal of the season when he dinked the ball over Vitto Mannone after the Italian had sprung to his right to keep out Juan Mata's powerful drive.
