A delivery driver has been sentenced to six years in prison after a dangerous overtaking maneuver resulted in a fatal head-on collision, killing a seven-year-old girl and severely injuring her father. Veselin Dudenski, 39, failed to see an oncoming Kia Rio due to a hidden dip in the road, crashing his Citroen Relay van into it. The tragic incident occurred on January 3 in Metheringham Heath Lane, Nocton, Lincolnshire, claiming the life of Elsie Gascoigne.
Tragic Details of the Collision and its Impact
Dudenski, who was delivering parcels at the time, admitted he did not notice the warning signs for the hidden dip located 425 meters from the crash site. Elsie Gascoigne was seated in the rear passenger seat of the Kia. She succumbed to her injuries the following day in hospital, while her father, who was driving, sustained permanent injuries including fractures to his breast bone, lower back, and arm, described as a "major injury with significant long-term implications." The family described Elsie as "bright, loving, funny, and full of life," adding that "Losing Elsie is not just the loss of a child, it’s the loss of our entire future. We have lost her laughter, her dreams and everything she would have become."
Legal Proceedings and Justice for Elsie
Veselin Dudenski pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. At Lincoln Crown Court, he was sentenced to six years in prison and disqualified from driving for eight years. As a foreign national, he is also subject to automatic deportation. Prosecutor Claire Holmes detailed that Dudenski "made a dangerous overtake of an unknown vehicle" while approaching a hidden dip. She emphasized that a "careful and competent driver should have been fully aware of the hidden dip" and that had Dudenski waited, he would have seen the Kia. Defending, Charles Myatt stated Dudenski "felt, believed, that the road was clear as he started the overtake," acknowledging his "gross mistake was to not observe the sign." Myatt described Dudenski, who sat with his head down throughout the hearing, as usually a "decent, law-abiding driver" who made a "catastrophic error of judgement." The court heard Dudenski was not distracted, speeding, or intoxicated.

No outcome can ever reflect the terrible pain that is felt by Elsie’s family and friends following her death. Dudenski’s decision to carry out an overtaking manoeuvre on a dark undulating road has ended with the worst of all outcomes."
