The former Premier League attacking midfielder has been enthralled at how the Foxes have smashed expectations to lead the pack with 12 games to go
Clint Dempsey is hoping for his former team Tottenham win the Premier League this season, despite reveling in Leicester City's surprise title challenge.
The Foxes were relegation candidates for many pundits at the start of the season but, with 12 matchdays to go, are two points clear of Spurs and Arsenal at the top of the division.
Dempsey is familiar with the topsy-turvy nature of the Premier League, having played there for six years before joining his current club the Seattle Sounders in 2013, and he's been glued to the unlikely battle for supremacy across the Atlantic.
"Leicester has done incredible and Tottenham has just been consistent throughout the whole season," the attacking midfielder, 32, told Goal. "It's about these next few months and seeing who wants it more."
"I've never seen anything like Leicester's incredible run. It's been pretty amazing," he continued. "It just goes to show you that anything can happen in the league if you prepare and are organized and have belief, you can do the impossible. It would be crazy to see them win, but since I played with Tottenham I'm going to have to root for them and hope they can pull it off."
Dempsey, who scored 57 times in more than 200 Premier League appearances, also reflected on the highs and lows that come with the unpredictability of the English top flight.
"The Premier League has always been a difficult league to be a part of," the U.S. international added.
"I've been on teams that have finished pretty well – sixth with Fulham, fifth with Tottenham. I've also been on teams that have been in the relegation battle.
There's always surprises each year and it sure is exciting for fans to watch but there's also a lot of pressure on the top clubs."
Dempsey scored an impressive free kick and a headed goal Tuesday as the Sounders held Club America to a 2-2 draw in their first competitive game of the season, a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg at CenturyLink Field.
Following the return leg in Mexico City on Wednesday, the Rave Green open their MLS season March 6 at home against Sporting Kansas City.
