Following the announcement made last fall on the production kickoff for the SP:01, Detroit Electric has handed its first vehicle over to Jowett Motors (Asia) Ltd.

The event was celebrated at the manufacturer's assembly plant in Leamington, Spa, UK, where Detroit Electric's Head of Engineering, Ben Boycott, was joined by Dr. Richard Lee, Chairman of Jowett Motors.

The white electric car will be used as a demonstrator vehicle for prospective customers and is part of Detroit Electric's expansion and investment in the Asian region, where the manufacturer hopes to announce a distributor for Japan, soon: "The new SP:01 sports car is a diamond and a collectable item in itself. It's a super car look and feel and, of course, it delivers supercar performance", stated Richard Lee.

Featuring an electric motor with 285hp and a single-speed automatic gearbox , with a choice of six-speed manual / twin-speed automatic, at an extra cost, the SP:01 promises to be "the world's lightest and fastest two-seat pure-electric sports car".

It needs 3.9 seconds to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) and it can go up to a top speed of 249 km/h (155 mph). Detroit Electric's SP:01 will go on sale in Europe and Asia over the coming months. Prices have yet to be announced.
